About Me

National political reporter covering the White House race and a candidate for the ONA Board of Directors

I’m Juana Summers, a Missouri born and bred political reporter, currently on the 2012 team at POLITICO. I’m passionate about the intersection of journalism and technology and finding new ways to distribute and promote content across platforms.

I’ve previously covered statewide elections, politics and policy for news outlets nationwide, including The Kansas City Star, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Columbia Missourian and KBIA-FM, the Columbia Mo. NPR affiliate.  I’ve also done general assignment reporting at the Austin American-Statesman and KCFreePress and Web produced for Washingtonpost.com.

I’ll be headed to Florida in July to participate in the Society of Professional Journalists’ Reporters Institute at the Poynter Institute. Back in Washington, I’ll work with college journalists participating in the Institute for Political Journalism.

I am also a Chips Quinn Scholar and participated in the New York Times Journalism Institute in New Orleans.

While I now live in DC, I’m a Midwestern girl at heart. I was born and raised in Kansas City and graduated from the Missouri School of Journalism with a degree in Media Convergence. Convergence is an industry-wide buzzword right now, but what it really means is that I think about stories as three-dimensional packages and work to innovate new ways to engage news audiences.

When I’m not working, I drink too much black coffee, listen to alternative rock and watch a lot of CSPAN and re-runs of The West Wing. I also dance at a local studio and am one of those people who finds working out fun.

If you’d like to talk shop, collaborate on a project or new venture or just get a cup of coffee, shoot me an email!
